When creating your baby clothing list, it’s easy to get caught up in cute colors and adorable prints – but don’t forget about safety and practicality. A newborn baby will need simple, soft clothing that’s easy to put on and take off, so you can quickly change their diaper and wipe them clean, all without having to unwrap a whole new outfit. And, you’ll want to have some special outfits for the big day, to wear home from the hospital or for family photos or to meet baby friends and family.
Newborns grow out of their smallest sizes in no time at all, so make sure you include clothing in a few larger sizes as well. This is especially important for outerwear, as babies need extra layers to stay warm.
You’ll also want to add some sleepwear and loungewear to your baby clothing checklist. Look for cotton pajamas with either snaps or zippers that will be easy to dress and undress baby, as well as soft fleece PJs and short-sleeved bodysuits. Some families find that newborns prefer to wear their PJs during the day as well, which is perfectly fine! You’ll want to stock up on 3-4 pairs of footie PJs and 1 or 2 gowns.
Infants need plenty of hats to keep their heads warm, and there are many styles to choose from, including beanie-style hats that won’t fall off when they’re playing or sleeping and hats with ears in the style of bunnies, bears and foxes for cold weather. Choose a few of each style, so you’ll have options for any weather.
A bib is another essential item for every newborn, and it’s often recommended to have several of them on hand because babies drool so much. You’ll also want a few washable cloth towels, as these are super-soft and absorbent to help clean baby when he or she is wet.
In warmer climates, a sleeveless sun hat is perfect for keeping little ones safe from the harsh UV rays of the sun. And, of course, a muslin baby blanket or two will be needed to swaddle newborns and provide a soft, lightweight layer of warmth over their bodies.
When adding clothing items to your baby registry, it’s helpful to remember that different brands run a bit differently in terms of sizing, so it’s best to add a few pieces from a few different styles to give you a variety of fit options. This way, you can be confident that the clothes you receive will be a good fit for your little one.
For a comprehensive baby clothing checklist that includes all the basics, check out our list below. This list has been based on the idea that you’ll need 16 outfits in each size to have enough to get through four days (and up to four diaper changes) with no laundry to do in between. However, you can tailor this list to suit your specific needs, for example, by increasing the number of outfits in warmer weather or by adding some additional winter-specific clothing.
