Buying Baby Clothing at Walmart

New parents are overwhelmed enough without having to deal with exchanges for clothes that are too small. It’s also a waste to purchase something that will be outgrown before the next holiday, so it pays to get sizing right. “Baby clothing is often sized by month, but it’s more important to consider weight and length when choosing a size,” says Christensen. “You want the garment to be snug enough to prevent a diaper blowout, but you don’t want it so tight that it restricts movement.”

Fortunately, most baby brands provide detailed size charts online, so gift-givers have plenty of resources at their disposal. For instance, Carter’s and Cat and Jack tend to run true-to-size in both length and width, while Old Navy and Gerber run a bit smaller. And if you’re not sure of the baby’s height or weight, err on the side of caution and select a larger size.

Once the baby is a year old, clothing sizes shift to six-month ranges: 12-18 months or 18-24 months, which leave room for growth until baby is ready for 2T, or toddler. This is a great time to purchase a few pairs of long-sleeve onesie pajamas, or a lightweight knit cardigan that can be layered over the top of a dress for chilly autumn nights.

Walmart recently rolled out a new line of soft, organic baby clothing called M + A by Monica + Andy, which is currently available online and in 1,100 stores along the layette wall. The collection includes a variety of bundles including long-sleeve body suits and pants for $18, a cuddle box that includes a blanket, hat and mittens for $20, and 14-piece sets featuring two tops, two bottoms, a bib, mittens and a hat for $80. The apparel is priced consistent with Walmart’s everyday low prices.
