What to Dress Baby in for Photos

Whether it’s a professional newborn session or family photos at home, outfit choice affects how the pictures turn out. These tips focus on what photographs well while keeping the baby comfortable.

Colours

  • Soft neutrals and muted tones (cream, oatmeal, sage, dusty blue) keep attention on the baby’s face.
  • Solid colours usually photograph better than busy prints or large logos.
  • For family photos, coordinate colours rather than matching exactly.

Textures

Knits, lace, linen and muslin add visual interest without strong colours. Many newborn photographers keep a selection of simple bodysuits, knit rompers, wraps and hats in the studio, so ask what’s available before buying anything special.

Fit and comfort

  • Choose well-fitting clothes; very large garments bunch in photos.
  • Avoid tight waistbands or elastic that leaves marks.
  • Plan several simple outfits rather than one elaborate one.
  • Keep the room warm if the baby will be partly undressed, and take breaks for feeding.

Safety during newborn sessions

Some popular newborn poses are composites made from several photos while a parent supports the baby. Choose a photographer who is trained in newborn safety, keeps a hand near the baby, and doesn’t leave babies unattended in props. Remove headbands and accessories when the baby sleeps after the session.

At home

Window light and a plain background often matter more than the outfit. Take photos when the baby is fed and rested, and have a spare outfit ready.

Newborn sessions

Newborn sessions usually happen in the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies sleep a lot. Many photographers prefer simple wraps, a plain knit romper, or nothing but a nappy cover, with the room kept warm. If you bring your own outfit, pick soft, stretchy fabrics that go on easily without much handling, and avoid anything with tight elastic or many fastenings. Ask the photographer in advance what they provide.

Older babies and milestone photos

For sitters and crawlers, outfits that let them move look more natural. Rompers, dungarees, knit sets and simple bodysuits with leggings all work well. Bare feet often photograph better than socks. Milestone photos, such as six months or the first birthday, are a common time for a special outfit; choose something the baby is comfortable in, as fussy babies make for fewer good photos.

Family photo coordination

  • Choose a palette of two or three colours and let each person wear a different combination.
  • Mix textures (knit, denim, linen) to add interest without strong patterns.
  • Avoid large logos, slogans and very bright neon, which draw the eye.
  • Dress the baby last, just before photos, to avoid spills.
  • Bring a backup outfit for the baby in the same palette.

Seasonal ideas

  • Spring: pastels, florals in small prints, linen rompers.
  • Summer: white and cream cotton, muslin, sun hats in shade.
  • Autumn: rust, mustard and olive knits; corduroy.
  • Winter: cable knits, deep reds and greens, cosy textures indoors.

Props and accessories

Hats, headbands and bonnets can look sweet in photos. Use them only while the baby is closely supervised, check that they’re not tight, and remove them as soon as the photos are done. Avoid accessories with small parts, long ribbons or cords. Baskets, buckets and other props used in newborn photography should only be used by trained photographers with a hand on or near the baby at all times.

Lighting and backgrounds

Soft natural light from a window flatters skin tones and fabrics. Very white outfits can lose detail in bright light, so cream or soft grey often photograph better. A plain wall, a bed with neutral sheets or an outdoor space in open shade makes a simple backdrop. Avoid placing a sleeping baby on a soft bed or pillows except for a quick, supervised photo; afterwards, move them to a safe sleep space following NIH Safe to Sleep guidance.

After the session

Change the baby into comfortable everyday clothes, remove all accessories, and feed or settle them as usual. If you bought an outfit just for photos, washing it before use is still worthwhile; see our washing guide. Special outfits can be stored with the photos as keepsakes or passed on.

Choosing a photographer

If you book a professional newborn session, ask how the photographer keeps babies safe and warm, whether they have newborn safety training, and what outfits and wraps they supply. Reviews and portfolios show their style. A good photographer will follow the baby’s cues, pause for feeds, and never put a baby in a pose that relies on the baby supporting their own head or weight.

Budget-friendly options

Special photo outfits don’t need to be new. Plain knits, family heirlooms and secondhand pieces often photograph beautifully. Borrowing from friends, using the photographer’s wardrobe, or choosing a simple outfit you’ll use again saves money. Many striking baby photos feature nothing more than a plain bodysuit in good light.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing an outfit that’s too small, so it gapes or pulls at the snaps.
  • Dressing the baby too early and arriving with stains.
  • Busy patterns that clash with the background.
  • Too many accessories, which distract from the baby’s face.
  • Scheduling during the baby’s usual fussy time of day.

Planning around naps and feeds tends to matter more than the outfit itself.
